Animal Care Attendant Position (Part-Time)


Reports to: Shelter Coordinator/ Veterinarian 


Position Summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day care and cleanliness of the animals and premises. Provides medical aid and/or first aid to animals as instructed. Provides customer service to the public and performs reception duties in the branch.


  • Feeding of all animals housed within the shelter
  • General cleaning and disinfecting of the premises and equipment used within the shelter i.e. food bowls, cat litter pans, utensils, carrying cages
  • Laundry Duties as required
  • General bathing and grooming of animals as required
  • Vaccinates and deworms shelter animals on intake
  • Notifies supervisor of any health problems or concerns regarding the animals
  • Works effectively in a team and provides training and coaching with volunteers
  • Seeks veterinary advice and transports animals to vet clinic when required
  • Preforms micro chipping
  • Receives and logs incoming animals into Pet Point with picture immediately
  • Maintains animal medication logs
  • Exercising of animals
  • Assists the public with adoptions, inquiries and recommends adoptions and works to increase adoption numbers
  • Follows policies and procedures set out by the Society and reports all incidents to his/her Executive Director immediately
  • Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations
  • Immediately reports all incidents of injury, property damage, absence of or failure of a protective device and/or equipment to the supervisor immediately
  • In the event of injury, works cooperatively with the Executive Director to facilitate an early and safe return to work


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Makes recommendations for positive changes to operations
  • Occasional reception duties i.e. greeting the public, answering phones, filing and general clerical duties
  • May perform other TBDHS position functions
  • Other duties as required



  • Must have genuine compassion for animals
  • Animal care training and experience would be an asset
  • Good command of the English language (written and verbal)
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Must be flexible to perform a variety of duties
  • Must be a team player with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must not have allergies limiting or affecting exposure to animals
  • Valid “G” driver’s license is an asset



  • Certificate as Animal Care Attendant or equivalent would be an asset
